The Porsche 924 was an attempt by Porsche to make a slightly different form of sports car to the 911's they had been producing for so many years. In the early 80's it was the time for the "yuppies" and the car of choice was a 924 or a 944. The 924 started off with a 2.0 audi engine very similar the the one in the VW Golf GTI at the time. The design was also very different from what Porsche had been producing up until this time. The main change was the layout of the vehicle. The engine was in the front and a "boot" was in the rear. The term boot should be used very loosely as many struggled to squeeze golf clubs in. The 924 soon had a slightly more powerful big brother the 924S this was given a 2.5 litre engine and power steering and was seen as a big improvement form the early somewhat flat 2.0 924 engine. The same engine that went into the 924S was then placed into what became the replacement for the 924 the 944. The 944 was a little bigger that the 924 but to look at was very similar. It was a soon to get a 16 valve engine that was not Porsche's best workmanship by any standards and then a 3.0 that was introduced as the 944 S2 this was a great car. They also produced a number of 944 turbo models which were a cheaper alternative to the 911 but they were not far behind on performance.

In the early 90's Porsche decided that the 944 needed a facelift and the 968 was unveiled. This had a 3.0 engine very similar to the late 944S2's, the car was quite a bit different to look at. It had been smoothed somewhat compared the the quite hard lines of its siblings the 944 and the 924. The 968 was only produced for a short period of time and was the last of the front engined water cooled models in that vein. Porsche produced some "CS" versions these were totally stripped out versions with bucket seats and wind down windows, these proved popular as a track day car and was the closest you could get to feeling like Derek Bell whilst on your daily commute. Many of these had colour coded wheels and decals down the side of the 968 and were easily distinguished.
